' People can assist. People can help, but - when it comes to my money there are no Gurus.'
I remember the first time that I started to pay attention to terms like cash flow, and profit centers. Though I had an MBA, these terms really did not hit home until, I watched a commentator interview a special guest on television. The guest was the late - and truly great - Barry White.
Here was this guy, that most considered a love-song singing maestro, talking about the responsibility of taking care of an entire orchestra when he traveled. His answers to the commentator made it clear to me, he had the entertainment, and the money making side of his business under control.
The commentator in his interview with Barry mentioned that he was the Guru of love. He went on to ask him, “After such a long absence, how did you make it back?” Barry had not released an album in sometime.
Mr. White quickly checked the man. He said, ' Guru. I ain't no Guru. And I have not been anywhere. If it makes you feel good to say I am back, then fine.'
Barry would not let the commentator set him up as an expert or Guru.
The Barry Whites of the world and someone like Bob Johnson, founder of Black Entertainment Television, are wise. They don’t let celebrity go to their heads. They will quickly let you know that they 'ain’t no Gurus.'
What's the point? People can assist. People can help, but – when it comes to my money there are no Gurus. I appreciate the great advice that I can get from a sharp broker. I understand and care about the help I may receive from a well-schooled financial planner. You have thousands of highly educated people who want to help you. They are making an honest buck. Some may attempt to push the stock diseur or investment of the day on you. On the other hand, most won't.
The challenge is not to slap your money under the mattress. If you try something and it does not work - don’t give up. Remember if you learned something from the process – you can never fail. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get back in the game.
